Life of Pie: Movie Review
Life of Pi is a highly emotional film about Piscine Molitor Patel, a 13-year-old Indian kid who was born a Hindu but is also Muslim and Christian. He loses his family in a shipwreck and ends himself in a lifeboat with cargo from his father's zoo. The plot revolves around his incredible trip, survival, and faith in God. David Magee turned the novel into a balanced script that does not allow the initial section of the book to drag down the film while yet allowing us to empathize to Pi's belief system. Ang Lee employs special effects and 3D to create a wonderful backdrop that invites you to go lost in the water like Pi does.
Claudio Miranda's cinematography is gorgeous, as is Michael Danna's background soundtrack. Suraj Sharma as Pi is excellent, and Tabu as Pi's mother is lovely. Gérard Depardieu, Adil Hussain, Rafe Spall, and Irrfan Khan have minor roles, but the real star of the picture is Richard Parker, the computer-generated tiger. Life of Pi is not for everyone, but it is a movie lover's dream.
